Suns collect plenty of wins over weekend

The past weekend was a successful one for ‘AA’ Golden Suns teams as they continue to climb their way up the standings in the South Central Alberta Hockey League.

U13

The U13 Suns had a pair of games on tap this past weekend as they had a two-game homestand.

On Saturday, they welcomed in Red Deer Parkland for an afternoon game. In a close game, the Suns would skate to a 5-3 win thanks to goals from Devin Groenenboom, Yanming Chen, Gracen Schooten, Foster Weatherhead, and Nixon Miller. Groenenboom would also collect an assist while Truett Moeller had a pair and Arlo Heal, Tate Serfas, and Liam Okell found the score sheet with one assist each.

Griffin Stenger faced 27 shots in the Suns’ net.

Sunday afternoon saw Okotoks Oilers Green make their way to Taber and it resulted in a close 2-2 tie. Heston Hansen and Groenenboom had the Sun goals while Chen, Serfas, Miller, and Okell collected an assist each.

Stenger was back between the pipes and made 19 stops on 21 shots.

The coming weekend sees another pair of games for the U13 Suns as they hit the road for a two-game road trip. On Saturday, they see a rematch with Okotoks Oilers Green while Sunday they face off against the Foothills Bisons.

The Golden Suns sit in second place in the South Conference with 24 points.

Only one game was on the U15 Suns’ schedule this past weekend as they welcomed in the Wheatland Warriors.

In a tightly contested battle, the game would end in a 3-3 tie. Tage Jensen had two goals while Tait Vermeersch had the other. Mason Seibel, Ty Hanson, and Kayden Dress collected assists in the game.

Bowen Hann got the start for Taber and made 22 saves on 25 shots.

A pair of road games are on the slate for the coming weekend as the U15 Suns head to Medicine Hat on Friday for a matchup against the West Central Tigers and then on Sunday, the team goes north to Red Deer to take on the Steel Kings.

The Golden Suns sit in fourth place in the South Conference with 17 points.

U18

The U18 Suns took care of business this past weekend as they went undefeated in two games.

On Friday night, the team was in Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes and the Suns secured a 6-1 win. Riley Preachuk had a hat trick while Jaxxon Pavka had two goals and two assists. Kobe Fujita had the other Sun tally while Rylan Millo had two assists and Rhett Klemen, Hunter Van Vaerenbergh, Connor Eldridge, and Devon Robichaud had one assist each. Landon Porteous was rock solid as the net miner turned away 32 shots.

The Suns kept rolling on Sunday afternoon when they hit the road to Medicine Hat as they skated to a 6-5 win over the West Central Tigers. Millo had a goal and two assists, Pavka had a pair of goals, Jasper Lyle had a goal and an assist, Brinley and Kade Degenstein and Heath Hansen each had two assists, while Klemen and Fujita had one goal. Preachuk also chipped in with one assist.

Kieran Hancock got the start for the Suns and made 25 saves en route to the win.

When the weekend arrives, the U18 Suns will have another pair of games as they have a home and away with the Medicine Hat Hounds. The teams are in Taber on Friday for an 8:30 p.m. puck drop and then in Medicine Hat on Saturday night.
