With September over, the Halvorson Family was able to hold their annual Run for Montana the weekend of Sept. 25.

“It initially started from friends of mine when we first lost Montana. They had put on the first annual run for Montana to help with funeral costs and stuff like that. I have just continued it and we’ve done the second and third annual. This would be the fourth. It has turned out great and we’ve continued to do it as long as we possibly can because that was the sport she loved,” commented Tara Halvorson.

The Halvorson Family have done different things for the event since then, but the spirit of supporting Montana hasn’t changed.

“The second year we donated $4,000 or $5,000 to a horse rescue. And the third year we put the money into a run for Montana account which is also what we’ll be doing this year. For the fifth annual, we will be doing saddles, prize money, and bigger prizes. We all do barrel racing as that was her favourite sport. People can also just trot around and show their support for Montana.”

The run was held at the Halvorson place this year, as with COVID restrictions, holding it in the agri-plex, as was previously planned, wouldn’t have been as feasible as hosting it outdoors.

They did have an entry fee where 70 per cent went to the winners of the competition, while 30 per cent gets put into an account for the next year.

“That way we can have better prizes. We have lots of peewees and lots of people who have never even barrel raced come. We also have a silent auction table for people who don’t barrel race, but want to come and look at the table they’re more than welcome.”

This year, the prizes included buckles for first, horse blankets for second, halters for third and horse feed for fourth.

The Halvorson family also believes the event has grown in the past few years.

“It has grown in the past few years. This year will be a bit smaller because there are two other big events in the barrel racing community. But this year, there (was) around 90 competitors, In previous years, we’ve had around 140 or 150. It’s possible we could expect up to almost 300 next year with the prizes we have planned.”
