In mid-September, the W.R. Myers golf team suited up for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association South Golf Zones at the Taber Golf Course.

Overall, the W.R. Myers team competed and came away with a favourable result.

The tournament saw 138 golfers competing, which included four from W.R. Myers.

The W.R. Myers boys team placed third in the event behind Vauxhall and Magrath.

This year’s boys team included Brennan Abela, Deegan Kinniburgh, and Alex Makarchuk.

Makarchuk came in second overall and shot a score of 76 and was scheduled to go to Mayerthorpe to compete at the ASAA Golf Provincials, but unfortunately, the tournament has been postponed until next spring.

“Provincial Championships require a large number of people from all over the province to gather in one place. Given the high number of COVID cases in Alberta combined with the current strain on the health care system, it is not in the best interest of the health and safety of the hosts, volunteers, coaches, and athletes to hold this event,” reads a statement from the ASAA. “We encourage schools and zones to continue to follow COVID-19 directives from the GoA and AHS, while continuing to provide athletic opportunities for student-athletes in their own area. To the student-athletes who have qualified for provincials: congratulations on your performances at your Zone Championships! We’re looking forward to seeing you all at Provincial Championships when it is safe to do so.”
