Alberta environment ministry could be altering mule deer hunting rules

Posted on September 2, 2020 by Taber Times

Alberta’s Environment and Parks ministry is looking to update mule deer management plans potentially to alter hunting regulations and allocations in different regions.

A recent release from the ministry states that the current plan was developed in 1989, and while populations in some areas are declining, there is an over-abundance in others.

“Alberta Environment and Parks has a robust conservation agenda, which includes updating management plans for other species,” Environment Minister Jason Nixon stated in a release.

A new advisory committee will provide input on the updates and make the potential changes known in the spring of 2021 before a new plan is enacted.

That board will include representatives from the Alberta Beef Producers, the Alberta Conservation Association, the Alberta Fish and Game Association, the Alberta Bowhunters Association and outfitting industry groups.

A parallel engagement process with First Nations and Metis groups will also take place, the release states.
