Two players from the W.R. Myers Rebels football team are making their way to compete in the ACG All Canada Bowl in Chilliwack, B.C. this weekend.

“They have put together an across-Canada tournament, where Team West is made up primarily of players from Alberta and B.C. going up against Team East which is mostly players from Manitoba and Ontario,” said Jason Jensen, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels football team.

Mike Sawatzky was selected to play at quarterback and defensive back and Ashton Werewka was selected to play on the offensive and defensive lines.

“This is really big, especially in Mike’s case. He was injured and wasn’t able to compete in the Current Stars Bowl back in December. He was along for the ride and they approached him to see if he would be interested in playing in this Bowl game. They obviously recognized his talent level,” said Jensen. “It was sort of the same with Ashton. He’s been involved in a couple of these Bowl games and he’s made his presence felt. As far as I know, they ask for video submissions and they do interview processes from across Western Canada. The fact these boys made the cut is pretty big.”

However the dynamic duo perform this weekend, it will serve as a solid foundation to the upcoming fall gridiron season for the Rebels, with pre-season camp starting in mid-August.

“Playing against top-level competition right before the season starts will help these boys immensely because they will basically be in game shape when we start training camp.”
