The Lethbridge Pronghorns will be hosting two pre-season rugby games at the Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park on Sept. 2 as part of the University of Lethbridge Shine event.

The Horns junior varsity team will lineup against the University of Alberta Pandas junior varsity in the first game.

The other exhibition game sees the varsity Pandas take on the Central Washington varsity team from Ellensberg.

Two W.R. Myers alums Genna Wright and Keegan Brantner will participate in the first game in some capacity, marking a quick homecoming for the two players before the start of the regular season.

Horns staff say the home town players played a factor into hosting the game but that wasn’t the only reason why they chose Taber for the games.

“Of course having Keegan and Genna are important to why we’re playing there but at the same time we like to go to locations in Southern Alberta that have suitable facilities for University rugby” said Women’s Rugby Team Manager Toby Boulet.

Brantner is heading into her second year as a Pronghorn, meanwhile Wright is getting her first taste of university-level rugby.

This is the first time the Horns have played pre-season games in neighbouring communities for about six or seven years according to Boulet, the last being in Vulcan.

No other locations are planned for this year, but the Horns hope to make it to other towns in the near future.

“We’ve talked about playing in Raymond but we haven’t nailed down a time yet but I would expect at least one game in the next year or so,” said Boulet.

The games in Taber will kick off with the Horns and Pandas at 1 p.m. and be followed by the varsity matchup between the University of Alberta and Central Washington at 3 p.m.

The Pronghorns regular season will kick off at home against the University of Calgary on September 21.
