W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team hung with a Southern Alberta Girls Basketball League powerhouse for awhile, before eventually falling to Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clippers 80-71 to head into the Christmas break back on Dec. 22 on the road.
The Rebels enjoyed three-point and nine-point leads at the first quarter and half-time benchmarks respectively before the Clippers came roaring back.
“We came out very strong in the first half. I think we surprised them a little bit. Defensively, we played extremely well in those first two quarters. But, a game has four quarters, so I knew at the half, we were far from being done,” said Kenney Wood, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team.
“In the third quarter, LCI came out firing on all cylinders, I think they hit every shot they put up. By the end of the third we had lost the lead, and it was a dog fight to the end. They hit a couple bank-shot three pointers which I’m pretty sure they didn’t call, but they still count. Those six points down the stretch really helped them, and we just couldn’t close the gap in the end. They have a very strong centre who has signed with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns for next year, and in the fourth quarter she really dominated and kept her team ahead.”
Millay Johnson was all over the court in her well-rounded game, registering 23 points, eight rebounds and nine steals.
Natalie Hoyt added 17 points. Kitawna Sparks had the double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Lauren Steed also contributed double-digit rebounds with 11 boards.
“We never gave up and played hard right through to the final buzzer. Marty and I were very proud of the girls effort. LCI should be a provincial contender in 4A at the end of the year, so to be able to push them this hard is a great sign that our Rebel team is also doing things that will put us in a good position at the end of the year for our zone,” said Wood.
W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team hosts Chinook Coyotes this Saturday with junior varsity at 6 p.m. and the varsity team to follow at 7:45 p.m.
The Rebels also host Raymond Comets on Jan. 11 with junior varsity at 6 p.m. with varsity at 7:45 p.m. at Myers gym.
