W.R. Myers wrestlers attended a tournament at Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary earlier this month, with a couple of grapplers bringing home gold.
“Dakota Foster pulled off a huge upset against a guy who was top three in his weight category last year,” said co-coach Emmitt Campbell of Foster’s gold-medal performance. “There was just the one other wrestler for him in his weight class so they had a best-of-three. Dakota took two matches out of three.”
Peter Waeckerlin also dominated in his weight category to take gold with Kathrin Waeckerlin taking fourth place.
“I’ll argue she went toe-to-toe with some of the best wrestlers at the tournament and held her own,” said Campbell, adding Liesl Steinborn got a third in a few tough matches. “It was a smaller weight category, but all the girls were experienced and it was great for Liesl to learn off of it all.”
Helena Froese placed third and was involved in an all-out-war in her last match according to Campbell in one of the highlights of the tournament.
“I’m proud of everyone’s performance in the tournament. It is a high-octane tournament every year and it’s always nice to see that our wrestlers can compete with the club wrestlers in Calgary and Edmonton,” said Campbell.
The wrestling team is off to rural provincials in Lethbridge this weekend.
