“Our deadline to get everything into the computer is June 8,” said Emily Bradbury, a summer student who is helping take registrations along with co-worker Courtney Moser who has been setting up shop at the Taber Community Centre.
In an interview with The Times late last week, Bradbury admitted numbers have definitely been below average compared to recent years.
“It’s been pretty slow, right now (last Friday), we are looking at less than half than we usually send to the Games, we haven’t broken 100 yet,” said Bradbury.
Those numbers are expected to get a boost from soccer entries with approximately 100 tacked on to registration numbers as those entries have not filed in yet.
“We have been calling schools, visiting schools, trying to get the word out and pushing our Facebook page which is Southern Alberta Summer Games – M.D. of Taber, so hopefully it will pick up,” said Bradbury. “Maybe with the Games being in Pincher Creek and it’s a bit of a drive, so there is that commitment to go to the Games. But there are so many events planned there, it truly can be a family vacation. There is something for everyone.”
Also, as of Friday, there have been no registrations for coaches for U8 soccer.
“A lot of those parents of U8 have never gone to the Summer Games before so they might not know what it’s about,” said Bradbury. “All the other age groups we have at least one coach.”
There have been no beach volleyball teams that have entered yet. Bradbury added the area is also looking for more badminton entries , 3-on-3 basketball.
“There is also a family golf mixed twosome which is a lot of fun,” said Bradbury.
If you would like to register for the Southern Alberta Summer Games you can phone Courtney or Emily at 403-223-5500 ext. 5561.
