Midget Oil girls team on verge of provincial berth

Taber midget Oil girls hockey team continued its impressive run over the weekend, pushing its record to 10-1 for 2014 after a 4-1 win over Strathmore Storm on Friday. The team also recorded a 5-2 victory over Olds Grizzlys on Saturday.

The 4-1 win over the Storm featured a goal and an assist by Genna Wright and Kendall Enns each. Tatum Nagai and Miranda Lohues also tallied with an assist from Annika Simmons.

The 5-2 Saturday win had Wright netting the hat trick to go with two assists.

Simmons registered a goal and four assists. Brooke Capner had a goal and an assist. Nagai and Tori Rombough each had assists.

Lennae Wong earned the win in net both games.

The team has a crucial week coming up having played Lomond on Monday and returning home today for a 6:45 p.m. game at the Taber Arena to determine who goes to provincials in Lloydminster.

Saturday is the team’s last league game. With a win the team locks up second place and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

“The team has something special going on. Their game just keeps climbing to a new level,” said Ryan Rombough, head coach of the Taber midget Oil girls hockey team.

BANTAM: Taber bantam Tier  II Oil Kings had a busy weekend of hockey play, taking two out of three games.

Friday’s tilt was a 9-5 victory over Drumheller Raptors.

Kevin Turner had the hat trick and Gavin Hoskins and Daylen Parker each had two goals apiece.

Ryan Hubble and Dylan Jones netted singles.

Turner also chipped in three helpers with Tyson Meier having two assists. Ryan McDonald, Ryan Mankow, Kadin Reynolds, Bryce Feldbusch and Hubble had single assists.

The team then edged Kneehill Chiefs 6-5.

Scott Loewen, Turner, Reynolds, McDonald, Parker and Hoskins scored. Assists were recorded by Evan Harkness, Parker and Hoskins.

Oil Kings ended its busy weekend with a 5-2 loss to Cochrane Rockies. Loewen and McDonald scored for the Oil Kings with assists by Feldbusch and Loewen.

ATOM: Taber atom Oil Kings suffered a 6-4 loss to the Airdrie Lighting on Sunday at the Taber Arena.

Nathan Verloop scored the hat trick for the Oil Kings with Colby Garner notching a single. Garner also registered two assists along with teammate Carson Cleland.

Dallas Cummins, Carson Haynes and Carter Deboer also registered assists.

NOVICE: Taber novice Oil Kings split a pair of games on the weekend starting off with an 8-5 win over Magrath at the Taber Arena on Saturday.

Kade Duell had four goals and Heath Hansen and Connor Eldridge  had two goals apiece. Xavier Hull earned the win in net.

The team then traveled to Warner and fell 10-7.

Hansen scored four more times and Duell had the hat trick.

Eldridge had an assist.

INITIATION: Both Taber initiation teams played each other on Saturday with Oil Kings 1 taking the game 13-10.

Scoring for Oil Kings 1 were Nathan Planger and Kayden Kress both with hat tricks, Jordan Genert, Langdon Cummins, and Max Anderson scoring two each and Tanner Fletcher with a single.

Replying for Oil Kings 2 were Sam Tolsma and Roman Pavka each with hat tricks, Wieler Krahn had two goals and Tyson Church and Tage Jensen both scored singles.
