TPS issue statement on recent drug overdoses

Taber Police Service

The Taber Police Service is advising the public that we are aware of two, and possibly three, drug overdoses that have recently occurred in our community.

Out of concern for public safety, we are sharing this information because you need to know. Please share with your family members, and those who are abusing illegal substances, that they are at significant risk when consuming street drugs. What you believe is one drug, may be tainted with a different substance and can lead to an overdose situation, hospitalization, and potentially death.

Police in southern Alberta are finding fentanyl-laced cocaine, which can pose a significant risk. Unfortunately, the tools that once were at our di sposal to address drug possession (in our experience up to 30 grams of hard drugs), have been taken away by the federal government, with little funding or capacity to help in an alternative way.

Prosecutions are not taking place as they did in the past, and communities are left to deal with the outcomes of this policy decision.

“As the police chief, I am not going to tell you that any amount or type of street drug is safe. If you use, you are at risk,” stated Chief Graham Abela.

If you or a loved one needs assistance in accessing help for drug abuse, please reach out to the Taber Police for addiction treatment information, access to the Virtual Opioid Dependency Program, or simply support for families of those suffering from drug use and abuse.

We are here to listen and point you in the direction to access help from professionals within our community and beyond.
