Town of Taber council meeting Nov. 14 briefs

The following are selected briefs of the Nov. 14 meeting of Taber Town Council. 

Closed Session

The following resolutions were passed at the conclusion of the in camera (closed session) portion of the meeting.

MD of Taber Appointments: Council voted unanimously to recognize the Municipal District of Taber’s appointments to the Joint Economic Development Committee as Coun.(s) John Turcato and Brian Hildebrand; recognizes the Municipal District of Taber’s appointments to the Intermunicipal Development Committee as Coun. Merrill Harris and Reeve Tamara Miyanaga; and on the basis of the recommendation of the Municipal District of Taber Council, appoints Municipal District of Taber representatives to Town boards as follows: Town of Taber Recreation Board – Brian Hildebrand; Town of Taber Arts & Heritage Committee – Merrill Harris, and Reeve Tamara Miyanaga as alternate; and Taber Municipal Library Board – Merrill Harris.

Asset Retirement Obligations

Council passed a motion to approve the contracted services of 360 Energy Liability Management, Asset Retirement Obligation Standard Implementation, in the amount of $49,484, with funds to be allocated from Operating MSI.

According to the minutes of the meeting, the vote was not unanimous.

Letter of Support Request: Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program

Council defeated a motion moved by Coun. Garth Bekkering requesting Mayor Andrew Prokop sign a letter of support for an increased investment in Environment and Protected Areas Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program to combat droughts and floods.

Temporary Portable Signage Request

Council voted unanimously to approve Development Permit DP 23-143 for the location of a temporary portable sign for a community event (4700 and 4720 50 Street Block C, Plan 7282JK) in the downtown area, with eight conditions.

DP 23-140 – 5701 Highway 864 – Move on Home

Council voted unanimously to approve Development Permit DP 23-140, for a secondary moved-on home located at 5701 Highway 864 (Lot 1, Block 1, Plan 951 2421), with 13 conditions.

Utility Billing Refund for Community Garden Water Supply

Council voted unanimously to direct administration to provide a water utility refund of $200, and $100, respectively, for water provided by “the residences” in support of the Community Garden users at Prairie Sunset Avenue, when the Town water supply was interrupted during the summer of 2023. 

The identity of the two parties receiving the refunds was redacted by the municipality.

Water Loss Study

Council passed a motion to direct Administration to proceed with a Water Loss Study, not to exceed $5,000 and to be funded from the 2023 Operating Reserves. 

According to the minutes of the meeting, the vote was not unanimous.

Sidewalk Connection

Council voted unanimously to direct Administration to look at the cost of connecting the sidewalk on 60 Avenue, in front of Taber Christian School, to the sidewalk in the Park Place cul-de-sac. 

Dog Park Maintenance

Council directed Administration to investigate the cost and requirements of maintaining “that area” of the dog park. 

According to the minutes of the meeting, the vote was not unanimous.

Traffic Committee Resolution

Council voted unanimously to require the Traffic Committee “to make recommendations for or against their decisions to Council, on whether or not Council accepts their decision, with Council having the final say; and to bring to the December meeting to investigate with recommendations from Administration.”
