Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many made changes to their everyday lives.

Melissa Duggan had been working at Taber Christian School as an educational assistant, but she saw a way to advance her education and provide better to serve youth in the area. Duggan decided to pursue further education at Lethbridge College in the Child and Youth Care program.

“So, I worked there for just over eight years at Taber Christian as an education assistant. Over COVID I really saw there was a need for mental health supports in the schools. I knew I didn’t have the knowledge base for that, so I decided it was time to grow in my knowledge base and a way to serve the community a little bit better and the school I worked for if I had more knowledge. I decided I’d go back to school,” she explained.

While at Lethbridge College, Duggan dug in and put in tons of hard work and that paid off in big ways. During her time at the college so far, she has made the honours list and Dean’s list, won the Karen Craig Memorial Award, the Louise McKinney Post-Secondary Scholarship, and just recently she learned she was the winner of the 2022 CYCAA Scholarship winner.

“I was surprised, I didn’t think I’d win anything. You know, there are 5,000 students, but I worked really hard and I made the Dean’s list, which was one of my scholarship awards. Another one was the Karen Craig Memorial Award and that one was for having a good home/school balance in my life. My kids gave me really no choice in that matter,” she said with a laugh. “The CYCAA, it was out of all of Alberta, so I didn’t expect to win that one at all. I feel very blessed to have been chosen for that. It was nice to be recognized for all of the life experience and work experience I have had up to this point. As well as my education journey to this point and I was shocked.”

As a single mother of three kids, the challenges of not only being a parent and a student can be daunting. Duggan says she took things in stride and overall, everything has been a great experience.
