Last year, Taber Christian School’s Grade 9 trail building class got to work on a great new feature for the trail system in the Taber area. Near the Taber transfer station, students Sebastian Hoekstra, Adrian Unger, Kelley Martens, Ryan Thiessen, and Dawson Giesbrecht, and TCS principal Klaas Hoekstra, were able to build a great new bike boardwalk.

“This was part of our trail building class that we had at Taber Christian School and these guys were in Grade 9, they’re in Grade 10 now. And these guys did a ton of the work. They were the designers and the builders,” confirmed Hoekstra. “This was the first year last year and it was our first time doing it, and I’m not sure if we’ll do it again this year just because of resources, but we hope to do it again this year. We have 19 mountain bikes at the school and so we’ll do mountain bike riding out here with the kids. So, the kids are familiar with the trails and it’s good to get them giving back as well. We call it service learning, right? They’re serving the community while they’re also learning, you know, how to build how to frame, how to put those things together.”

After plenty of hours, the final product is something the students are proud to have worked on. Many also voiced their opinion that getting to work outdoors/get out of school was well worth it.

“It took us about eight weeks and there were 10 of us in total building every time. You’re looking at about 240 hours of work, we wanted to make sure it was really secure,” added Hoekstra.

With Taber Trail 77 doing plenty of work in the area, this project made sense to add to the experience of the trails.
