While the pandemic delayed Colene Bennett from receiving her 2020 Senior of the Year award in the same year, the celebration was just as gratifying in June 2022.
The Senior of the Year award is presented through the Parkside Manor Seniors and the Kinsmen Club of Taber, and has been active since 1975.
And while the award had been handed out every year since 1975, the pandemic threw a wrench into things as 2020 saw Bennett chosen as the winner, but there was no chance to hold a celebration of the award. Despite the two-year delay, Bennett’s jubilation was just as high as it would have been had the award come in 2020.
“I was very, very honoured and surprised. The board didn’t let me know and I didn’t know for two years that they decided to give it to me in 2019. I was very humbled when they did tell me. Our president, Ray Bryant, handed me the tickets from the Taber Kinsman and said I had been chosen, and I was very happy,” she said.
Bennett received the award during Seniors’ Week earlier in June. From start to finish, Bennett says the entire day was a great experience.
“It was very nice. The whole day was nice and my family was there for the supper and it was very nice when I received my plaque. I thanked everybody for coming — it was a nice evening and it always is. The Heritage supper is a very good way to end,” she said.
And with COVID restrictions over, Bennett was incredibly happy to be able to celebrate in person. With that in mind, she also hopes the senior community starts to return to Parkside Manor this coming fall to once again get together and have some fun.
