It’s that time of the year again — the weather is heating up and there seems to be no stop for the Town of Taber as events are planned to be hosted at least once a month with May bringing the third annual Backyard BBQ Competition.
“We will have our normal barbecue competition, it’s our third year and will be an adult competition for ribs and then we’ve also added this year a kid’s competition for 12 and under to do hotdogs,” said Emily Hembrough, Taber’s Art’s, Culture and Event’s coordinator.
Hembrough commented that this year they want it to be bigger and better. “I think our first year we had 16 or 17 barbecuer teams, and this year we’re already at 10 (as of Apr. 27) alongside two kids registered. I feel like since our date has changed I hope we have nice weather, but it’s May so you never know.”
The event will take place in Confederation Park and will feature a pig roast and smoked turkey dinner that patrons can choose between as well as three local bands Ransom Note, 90 Times Over, and Another Simple Solution.
“We have cash prizes for first, second and third. We are working on a few door prizes and there’s a prize for the people’s choice competition which is included in the competitor’s registration. When you register for the rib competition you can also cook whatever you want for the people’s choice and anybody that’s walking through gets to judge that and there’s a prize associated as well. The kid’s competition will get something from the town and hopefully a cash prize for that as well.”
For the competitors, everyone will be bringing their own barbecue as long as it’s not propane and everything has to be done on-site that day.
“No pre-cooking or pre-marinating anything,” noted Hembrough. “For the kid’s competition the hot dogs, buns and the barbecue are all supplied; however they have to bring whatever they want for toppings.”
