Come the New Year, the Town of Taber has a new event in store for those looking to volunteer, join a user group or club, or possibly to sign up for sports.

Twice a year the town releases their leisure guide on taber.ca. There you can find and read happenings for the next six months. However on Jan. 6, 2022, the Arts, Culture and Events Coordinator Emily Hembrough plans to release the leisure guide, and also have a live event alongside it.

“It’s like a registration night with a little bit of a spin on it. We do our leisure guide every year and it used to be printed, but now it’s online. They can look through all the ads of leisure activities that user groups or businesses post on their programs that people can join so I wanted to do an event that could make it so they could physically talk with people about something or have their kid walk around and see what they’re interested in. But then to add the spin was to have groups and some not-for-profits to have the opportunity to look for volunteers as well. We have a few that aren’t clubs or sports, but are looking for volunteers. I think we used to do this years ago, but it hasn’t been around for a while so I figured we’d do it and see how it goes.”

Hembrough said this has been a thought in her mind for a while, but she didn’t really know how popular it would be. However, it seemed to have a decent following when she started talking with groups.

“So I thought ‘hey let’s go ahead with it and do it in January’ because that’s when our guide comes out, I wanted it to go hand-in-hand so if people didn’t know about that guide then they can just go there and see everyone.”

Currently, there are 16 not-for-profits and user groups that will be attending the Live Leisure Guide evening, but Hembrough says they have space for more.

She also mentioned they will be having a few draws throughout the night as well, and she believes some of the booths may be doing giveaways.

“There’s a few bringing some interactive booths as well, so people will be able to see what these groups are about as well. We have the Taber Nighthawks coming and I haven’t heard of them before, but they’re bringing their largest remote control airplane so people can see it. It’s different actually talking with somebody other than just reading it in a paper, you do get their view on it.”

The event is free to attend and free to apply for — with Hembrough stating she wants as many groups and people as possible so there will be no charge. She also wants people to hear about and see these groups so there will be no door charge for attendees.

“The event will be held January 5 at the Auditorium. It will run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. If this goes well, and is well received, I’d like to do another one around June. So hopefully we’ll do it twice a year right along with the leisure guide. Any groups that people can participate in or volunteer with are welcome to email me and ask for any information or an application. We have the Food Bank and Fire Department for example.”
