The Taber-Vauxhall detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) hosted a Community Town Hall virtually on the M.D. of Taber’s Youtube page Oct. 20.

As of Oct. 20 the detachment fielded five constables, however at the end of Oct. they have gone down to four constables.

Cpl. Brian Weisbrod, the acting Detachment Commander noted that “The idea of having the virtual Community Town Hall was to have a conversations with the public and community members — priorities we’ve set out through the year, and to show how we’re making out.”

Weisbrod mentioned they came up with priorities for the detachment through consultations they did at the end of March with the community and both the M.D. and Town of Taber councils. This led to them prioritizing traffic safely and crime prevention.

“The detachment has written 441 traffic tickets in combination with our integrated traffic units out of Lethbridge and Redcliff who have written 200 tickets this fiscal year in the M.D. of Taber, Barnwell and the town of Vauxhall. To date we’ve done seven joint operations that were traffic enforcement related. Two of these were with the Town of Taber Police Service and that were assisting with patrols during Cornfest.”

Weisbrod confirmed that joint operations are extremely valuable to the detachment.

“As for crime prevention goes, we have wanted to be on the roads here in Taber. That increases visibility when we’re out there making active patrols. I’m happy to say that the detachment here has surpassed our goal already with 1173 targeted patrols in the M.D. of Taber and the detachment area.”

Weisbrod said police visibility is a priority with the members, and they are regularly out on the road and not in the office.

“Stats for crime prevention are; break and enters are down 40 per cent as of this time last year. We do regular complicate checks on offenders as far as curfew goes.”
