Town council was made aware of concerns around stunting in the newly paved parking lot at the Taber Community Centre.

The Taber Police Service has spent quite a lot of time dealing with issues within the parking lot itself and they said it is critical users feel safe in the area.

With an increase of surveillance being a possibility, another option would be to change the Community Centre parking lot to event parking only as this gives TPS the means to go up to people and just tell them they need to go.

The presentation from TPS at town council’s regular council meeting on Aug. 16 was concluded with a surveillance video of a vehicle stunting in the lot.

TPS Inspector Howard Kehler noted that were it not for being a small community, and the driver admitting he did it, nothing would have happened.

“People stunting on the brand-new pavement is just the reality of it, and it’s not going to stop. Those kids that are squealing tires there were counting the days until that machinery was out of there so they could go again. I don’t think it’s too late to make the change. We need to send a message to our community that this is not a place to loiter. The CCTV is better, but not the answer,” explained Kehler.

“I was not in favour of event parking before, however, after this presentation I have changed my mind. I believe it’s important to investigate these possible revisions to the bylaw. The time has come to act,” Coun. Garth Bekkering replied.

“We’ve done what we can to try and clean up the garbage in this parking lot. But it’s the people who are doing this that are now responsible. If they would have done the right thing and stopped littering and stunting, this would not have happened,” added Brewin.

After the conversation, a motion was passed to direct the Traffic Committee to amend the traffic control bylaw to make the Community Centre parking lot into event parking.
