Back in 2017, the Taber and District Housing Foundation identified there was an active need for affordable housing within the community.

“It was getting in the way of our economic development opportunities,” said Phyllis Monks, director of planning and development for the Town of Taber.

A year later in 2018, a 60-acre plot of land was purchased, and it seemed to be a perfect storm for the sitting council.

“This is the baby of the current council,” Monks commented. “It only made sense this land would be residential, there was a need and council took that initiative. There was many different meetings to discuss what they wanted to see — but they were also open to a bunch of options. It just seemed like this perfect fit and we could give so many people the opportunity to afford and live within the community. We have council to thank.”

This was the basis of the Meadows of Taber project. A 60-acre plot of land south of the cemetery — that when completed — would have 302 housing locations with lots ranging anywhere from $67,900 to $77,900.

The name came from it being situated in the meadows, and there are plans to have the street names inspired by flowers that are native to the area.

“We are very excited about this project coming to fruition. It was back in 2017 when it started, so we’re four years in the making now and we’re only moving forward. This will be a great economic boost for the Town of Taber and area,” said Taber Mayor Andrew Prokop.

Currently, there is no plan to expand the area to include more than 302 housing lots.

“The land around the Meadows is privately owned, but if it were to be bought the planning is already there. I believe once the lots are sold and everything starts, it will take off very positively from there,” noted Prokop.

There are plans to build a park within the Meadows, as well — and additionally the land to the south of the new Taber Christian High School building will be zoned for additional recreation uses.

There will be multiple phases of the Meadows project, currently it is in the first and there are now 91 lots for sale.
