The Taber Society for Christian Education broke ground on their new high school June 10.

The society began in 1984, and has been expanding through the grades ever since. Going from accommodating Kindergarten through Grade 5, to where it now accommodates Kindergarten to Grade 10. With Grade 11 planned for fall 2021 and Grade 12, the year after. The building itself will be 33,000 square-feet, will include a full-size gym, science room, band room, art room, classrooms, library, student commons and a large kitchen space.

Talks began for the high school over 10 years ago, and with Taber also looking to open another high school it seemed like the perfect storm. Upon purchasing 10 acres of land from the town, the society realized their dream could become a reality.

“It allows for more parent choice for education. We very much want to be a part of and be visible within the community,” said Jason Visser, Taber Christian High School’s principal.

The Taber Christian High School meets in the completed expansion of the Taber Christian Reformed Church. Thus far in their inaugural year, the school has had 18 Grade 10 students with the TCHS, and 45 students for Grades 10 and 11 registered for the fall. The school’s theme is “Anchored to Hope.”

“It’s been a lot of planning, so it’s exciting to see it come to fruition,” added Visser.
