Posted on July 31, 2019 by Taber Times

On Saturday at 7:41 p.m., Coaldale RCMP along with Lethbridge Fire and EMS were dispatched to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 4 and Range Road 205.

It was determined a semi-tractor hauling agricultural equipment heading southeast on Highway 4 collided with a Chevrolet Equinox entering Highway 4 northbound at that intersection.

The speed limit on Highway 4 at that stretch of road is 110 kph. The Chevrolet Equinox was struck broad side by the larger semi-tractor in the centre of the highway. Vehicles entering Highway 4 are to stop prior to entering the highway as directed by a stop sign.

The impact on the small car was severe with the driver’s side being crushed. The two occupants of the car, an older couple in their 80’s from Taber, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and passenger in the semi-tractor were not injured.

Highway 4 was shut down to allow an RCMP traffic reconstructionist to investigate the scene.

Assistance from the Coaldale Fire Department was necessary to extricate the deceased.

Volker Stevin personnel were required to block the highway and re-route traffic.

That portion of Highway 4 at the Range Road 205 intersection was closed for approximately six hours and has since re-opened.

Next of kin notifications have been made. The names of the deceased will not be released. There will be no charges arising from incident.
