A 38-year-old Saskatchewan man accused of murdering a farm labourer north of Taber last year has had his case adjourned to June 7.
Charges laid against Stacey Charles Wahpistikwan, who did not appear in Taber provincial court on April 26, were put forward in order to make further arrangements for a pre-trial conference.
Wahpistikwan was released on bail on Dec. 3 of last year, and according to his attorney, Greg White, the accused is currently serving a jail sentence on weekends in Cold Lake, Alta. for an impaired driving conviction, which won’t be completed until early June.
Wahpistikwan is charged with second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body in the death of Silas Lorne Kiseyinewakup, who was killed near a farm north of Taber where he worked.
Police found the body Sept. 22, 2015 while responding to a complaint of a disturbance and report of a missing person.
Wahpistikwan was released from custody on the charges following his bail hearing in Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench in December, but remained in custody on less serious unrelated charges out of Wainwright, southeast of Edmonton. The accused is currently residing in Saskatchewan.
Conditions of his release on the murder and interference charges required that Wahpistikwan post $475 bail.
He was also ordered to live with his uncle in Big Island Cree Territory, Sask., report weekly to the RCMP, surrender or destroy any firearms and weapons he possesses, adhere to a nightly curfew, and provide breath or urine samples if requested by police.
He is also prohibited from contacting his sister and other witnesses in the case, and from consuming alcohol and drugs.
