Vauxhall Legion remembered as pillar of service and community

Posted on November 9, 2023 by Taber Times

Lest we forget.

As we move closer to November 11, Remembrance Day, we need to reflect and remember the past.

Remembrance Day, and the Royal Canadian Legion, were started to remember and not forget those that gave their lives fighting for the rights and privileges that we all enjoy in our present day society.

Remembrance Day and the Legions were all about respect!

So many men and women gave their lives; so many families were decimated never to recover.

Legions, as non-profit organizations, built large portions of the communities where they were formed.

I remember the Vauxhall Legion used to have two awards nights per year. At these “Awards Nights” thousands of dollars were handed out to any community group that needed some type of funding.

These community groups built all types of facilities within the community, and these groups and their projects, built not only facilities, but they also built a population that had a sense of “community” and the pride that evolved from that.

But those days have passed. People pass, people move on. And the old sense of community is lost.

As populations change, as demographics change, my sincere hope is that a new sense of community will evolve here and in the many other small communities that are losing their Legions. And some of the old values will be retained?

I, for one, will cherish the memories that the Vauxhall Legion provided me. And hope that, as the few remaining members of the Vauxhall Legion go through the painful demise of the Legion building and the memorabilia contained inside, that the wounds will heal.

To show your respect, you could consider to wear a poppy?

Lest we forget.
