Council trip to Japan different this time around

Posted on September 25, 2019 by Taber Times

It was recently revealed that Taber town council, in closed session, had decided to send the mayor, CAO and a town councillor to Higashiomi in June of 2020, all expenses paid.

For the 35th Anniversary of our twinning relationship with Notogawa, I was nominated to go as council representative at the time. I was reimbursed for my flight only. I paid out of my own pocket the train to Tokyo (return) from Narita, my hotel in Tokyo, my bullet train ticket to Higashiomi (return), my meals and other misc. expenses.

While next year recognizes the 40th anniversary, I think it is rather extravagant to send three town representatives, all expenses paid. This council plays rather loosely with our money, no wonder they discussed this in closed session.

I argue that perhaps just sending the mayor is feasible, but to send two others as well and on my taxpayer dollar, absolutely unnecessary. If they wish to accompany the mayor, let them pay their own way.
