Justice for all?

Posted on March 20, 2019 by Taber Times

To the Editor:

“Laws are spiderwebs through which the big flies pass and the little ones get caught.” – Honore de Balzac

“The law in its majestic equality forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the street and to steal bread.” – Anatole France

As in the March 13th, 2019 Taber Times court section, two very similar driving offences were reported with two very different court outcomes. One defendant was a well-connected individual, the other, an older woman on a low fixed income. It is not for me to comment on the judgement or pleas, but the optics of the results certainly lend credence to the two quotations above.

Yours truly,

RICHARD BETTS
