Alberta Party: Fewer MLAs, more teachers and nurses

Posted on April 23, 2015 by Taber Times

The Alberta Party would cut the number of Alberta MLAs from 87 to 61, reducing the number of MLAs by 30 percent and saving $32 million over a four-year term.
“The Alberta Legislature is the most ineffective legislature in Canada,” said Alberta Party leader Greg Clark. “Only PEI and Nunavut sat for fewer days last year.”
“What’s even more astonishing, is that Alberta has significantly more MLAs per capita than many other provinces. So we have a lot more people doing a lot less work.”
“Alberta also has more than double the provincial representatives per constituent than Ontario and if we applied the same ratio of representatives to our local city council, Calgary would have 25 councillors, instead of 14.”
“Reducing the number of MLAs by 30% will save money and lead to better government.”
