There were 17 swimmers from the Taber Viper Swim Club that attended the Fort Macleod swim meet this past weekend to get some extra competition in before regionals in Lethbridge.
Of those swimmers, three earned aggregate medals.
Renae Saunders’ first-place finishes in both 100-metre fly (1:20.59) and 200-metre IM (2:56.19), helped her get silver for 13-and-14-year-old girls. She also piled on the aggregate points with a second-place finish in 50-metre fly (34.51) and a third in 100-metre freestyle (1:13.70).
Jessica Anderson earned silver for 11-and-12-year-old girls by taking first in 50-metre backstroke (42.35) and 100-metre fly (1:34.16), along with a second place in 50-metre fly (37.43).
Lauren Pack earned bronze for nine-and-10-year-old girls by finishing in first in 100-metre freestyle (1:28.13), second in 25-metre backstroke (21.13) and third in 50-metre freestyle (40.25).
“It was super impressive. Out of 17 kids, we only had two disqualifications, so it went easy for the club,” said Teri Cook, head coach of the Taber Viper Swim Club. “There was a lot of fine tuning for our older, more competitive swimmers. We had a lot of best times.”
There were 21 best times recorded by Taber Viper Swim Club competitors. Other top-three times included Kelsey Garner as top swimmer in 50-metre backstroke (43.38) for 15-to-17-year-old girls. She also earned second in both 100-metre freestyle (1:19.69) and 200-metre IM (3:36.27).
Adison Hutzul was top swimmer for seven-and-eight year-old girls flutterboard (27.63). She also took second place for 25-metre freestyle (23.63).
Taylor Hutzul earned third place for 100-metre IM (2:10.90) for nine-and-10-year-old girls.
Rachel Pack clocked a third-place time in 50-metre fly (46.06) for 11-and-12-year-old girls.
For 11-and-12-year-old boys, Dylan Saunders earned a trio of second-place finishes in 50-metre backstroke (46.20), 100-metre backstroke (1:37.98) and 400-metre freestyle (7:14.13).
Taber Viper Swim Club has the upcoming long weekend off before competing at regionals in Lethbridge Aug. 4-7.
“We are going to be training really, really hard for the next week,” said Cook. “It’s more finalizing the little technical bits they need to work on. Just being in the pool and having some time and going away and getting your head right before regionals.”
