The 2025 Celtics basketball season is off to a great start. This year’s team is a combined program featuring players from Taber Christian High School (TCHS) and St. Mary’s, with a total of 17 athletes making up the Junior Varsity (JV) and Senior Varsity (SV) squads. The roster includes 12 players from St. Mary’s and 5 from TCHS.

The Celtics opened their season at the Coalhurst High School Tournament on December 5–6, finishing with a strong 2–1 record and placing second overall. The tournament concluded with a close loss in the championship game against Matthew Halton High School.

League play began shortly after against the Coaldale Christian Titans. The JV team started their season with an impressive 80–54 victory, while the SV team faced a tough challenge against the reigning 1A provincial champions, who look poised to be strong contenders again this year.

This past weekend, December 11–13, the Celtics traveled to Edmonton to compete in a 16-team tournament featuring top competition from across the province. The team finished the weekend with a 1–2 record, gaining valuable experience against high-level opponents.

Leadership on the court this season has come from Jacob Cabrera, Lucas Pidborochyski, Matthew Giesbrecht, and Maddox Kooiker, who have played key roles in the team’s early success. The Celtics are excited to see how the team continues to grow as the season progresses.

The team will close out December with a home game on December 13 against Willow Creek Jv at 6pm and SV to follow. Looking ahead to January, the Celtics will host their home tournament on January 23–24. For home game times and additional information, please visit the athletic calendar on the St. Mary’s website.
