Suns look for wins as Christmas break nears

The Taber Golden Suns were all back in action this past weekend as the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) moves quickly toward the Christmas break.

U11

The U11 squad were on the ice this past weekend for a pair of games. First up was a Saturday matchup against the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red on the road. Thanks to a three-goal second period, Taber was able to win 4-2 over Lethbridge. Parker Avison and Blake Bryan each scored and added an assist, Eisa Muminovic had two assists, Heston Honess and Bentley Dyck each hit the back of the net, and Carter Wiest notched an assist. Tove Morgan started between the pipes and made 27 saves on 29 shots.

After a solid start to the weekend, the Suns looked to go 2-0 when they welcomed in the Brooks Jr. Bandits on Sunday. Taber would pour it on in the third period as they cruised to a 9-3 victory. Avison and Maddex Howg both had a hat trick and two assists, Wyatt Foote notched three assists, and Heston Honess, Timber Davey, and Bryan all had a goal and an assist. Wiest, Muminovic, and Rhett Schooten all had an assist in the win. Remington Jardine was the starting netminder for the Suns, and he posted 36 saves on 39 shots.

This coming weekend sees a single game on the schedule for the U11s. On Saturday, they hit the road to take on the Foothills Bisons at 12:15 p.m.

U13

Two games were on tap for the U13 Suns, as they looked to add four points. On Saturday, they hosted the Lethbridge Hurricanes. A big three-goal third period saw Taber walk away from the rink with a 5-3 win. Levi Hanf and Burke Williams each had two goals, while Holden Emelson had the other. Lincoln Braun and Jackson Wiest each collected a pair of assists in the win. Lance Leusink was solid in net for a 33-save win.

Sunday’s action saw the Suns on the road as they took on the Wheatland Warriors. All the scoring happened in the third period, but Taber was on the losing end as they dropped it 4-3. Emelson scored two of the Taber goals while Hanf had a single. Justin Siemens had two assists, and Braun notched one. Leusink was back in net and made 21 saves on 25 shots.

The U13s now see an off weekend from AEHL action. They return to regular-season action on Dec. 19 against Foothills and Dec. 21 against Lethbridge.

U15

The U15 Suns had a busy weekend as they had three games. Friday night was a road game against the Okotoks Oilers that saw Taber fall 4-1. Ryder Nielsen had the lone Taber goal, assisted by Rudy Wojszel. Talen Sarathlal made the start in net and made 30 saves on 34 shots.

Saturday offered a chance for a rebound as Taber welcomed the Lethbridge Hurricanes. This time, Taber was able to carve out a 5-3 win on home ice. Travis Jackson had a goal and two assists, Hudson Stenger scored and added an assist, Deacon Webb notched a pair of assists, Wenzel and Dallas Alberts scored, and Cole Swanson had an assist. Sarathlal was back in net and had 39 saves on 42 shots.

The final day of the weekend saw a rematch between Taber and Okotoks as the Oilers came to town. Once again, the Oilers were able to take the win as they shut out Taber 3-0. Drew Tame made the start for Taber and was solid with 33 saves on 36 shots.

The U15 Suns now have a chance to regroup as their next AEHL games don’t come until Dec. 19 against Medicine Hat and Dec. 20 against East Kootenay.

U18

It was a two-game weekend for the U18 Suns. First up was a road trip to Calgary on Friday as they took on the NWCAA Stamps. Taber was in tough as they fell down 8-0 and were only able to score three of their own en route to an 8-3 loss. Chase Stronge had a goal and an assist, while Lincoln Weiss and Landon McEwen scored the other goals. Blake Smith had a pair of assists, and Foster Weatherhead and Grayson Biegel each had one. Dakota Hurst took the loss in net with 36 saves on 44 shots.

Returning home on Sunday, the Suns looked to end the weekend with a win as they took on the Wheatland Warriors. Thanks to a big game from Stronge, Taber was able to skate to a 5-1 win. Stronge had four of the Taber goals while Heston Hansen scored the other. Weiss had three assists in the win, while Breton Villemaire had two. Jack Lukacs collected the win in net with 12 saves on 13 shots.

Next action for the U18 Suns comes on Dec. 20 against Medicine Hat at home, and then on Dec. 21, Foothills comes to town.
