The Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) regular season is in full swing, and Taber Golden Suns teams were back on the ice this past weekend.
U11
Two games came and went for the U11 squad as they hosted Lethbridge and Bow Valley. Saturday’s action saw Lethbridge Hurricanes White come to town, and the game was all Suns as they cruised to a 12-2 victory on home ice. Heston Honess led the way with four goals and five assists, while Rhett Schooten had a hat trick and four assists. Blake Bryan also had a hat trick and notched an assist, Carter Wiest had three assists, Parker Avison scored twice, Liam Beckie had a pair of assists, and Madden Nakamura and Wyatt Foote each had an assist. Tove Morgan got the start in the Taber net and made 33 saves on 35 shots.
After a big win to open the weekend, the Suns looked to go 2-0 when Bow Valley came to town on Sunday. Taber would score the first four goals before the Timberwolves came roaring back. They would score three, but that was it as Taber held on for a 4-3 win. Maddex Howg had three assists in the win, Schooten had a goal and an assist, Walker Perlich, Avison, and Wiest scored, and Grayson Walker and Bentley Dyck contributed with an assist each. Remington Jardine was the starting netminder and made 30 saves on 33 shots.
This weekend sees another pair of games for the Suns as they head towards the Christmas break. On Saturday, they are on the road to Lethbridge to take on Hurricanes Red at 10:30 a.m. On Sunday, they are back at home to take on the Brooks Jr. Bandits at 10:30 a.m.
U13
After a pair of losses the previous weekend, the U13s looked to end November with a pair of wins at home. On Saturday, they took on the Bow Valley Timberwolves. While the teams would trade goals back and forth, Taber was able to take a 3-2 lead in the second, which was also the final score. Ben Souter and Burke Williams each scored and added an assist, Levi Hanf had the other Taber goal, and Justin Siemens, Ben Wojszel, and Peyton Honess all contributed with an assist. Lance Leusink collected the win in net with 25 saves on 27 shots.
Sunday was a rematch against the Easy Kootenay Avalanche. Neither team would score in the first two periods, but the Avalanche would rip off three straight in the final frame en route to a 3-0 win. Dylan Volk was in net for the Suns and made 21 saves on 23 shots.
Two more games come this weekend for the U13 Suns as they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, they hit the road to take on the Wheatland Warriors at 6 p.m.
U15
The U15s looked to snap a losing streak this past weekend over their two-game home stand. On Saturday, Red Deer was in town, and they skated to an 8-1 win over the Suns. Travis Jackson had the lone Taber goal, assisted by Ryder Nielsen and Nash Skanderup. Drew Tame took the loss in net with 42 saves on 50 shots.
Sunday’s game against the Foothills Bisons saw Taber fall back early. When the final buzzer sounded, they had lost 4-1. Jackson scored the only Taber goal. Talen Sarathlal was back in net for Taber and posted 42 saves on 46 shots.
After a rough November, the U15 Suns look to turn the page and post some wins in December. This weekend sees them on the ice for three games. Friday night has them on the road to take on the Okotoks Oilers at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the team is back at home as they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 8 p.m. The weekend finishes with a Sunday rematch at home against Okotoks. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m.
U18
November ended with a pair of road games for the U18 Suns. On Friday night, they were in Medicine Hat to take on the Hounds. Despite trailing 3-1 after one period, Taber would claw back, and thanks to a late goal, they were able to win 4-3. Chase Stronge had three assists, Grayson Biegel scored and added an assist, Foster Weatherhead had the game winner, Loki Thacker and Hunter Simpson scored, and Jasper Sidam, Raiden Koizumi, and Blake Smith all had an assist. Jack Lukacs was between the pipes and made 27 saves on 30 shots.
After an exciting Friday night game, the Suns were back on the ice on Sunday when they were the road team taking on the Foothills Bisons. The Suns would outshoot Foothills but were unable to put many past the Bisons’ goalie as they fell 4-1. Liam Okell had the line Taber goal assisted by Landon McEwen and Lincoln Weiss. Dakota Hurst made 29 saves on 33 shots in the Taber net.
This coming weekend sees another two games on tap for the U18s. On Friday night, the Suns are back in Calgary to take on the NWCAA Stamps at 7:45 p.m. Sunday’s action sees the Suns back in Taber as they take on the Wheatland Warriors at 3:30 p.m.
