On Monday, Jan. 27 we travelled to Prairie Winds Secondary School in Coaldale for a league game. We were expecting Prairie Winds to play us tough and they did, it was a very physical game for our girls with lots of fouls being called. We had a strong first half against them and they stepped it up on us in the second half, but we were able to pull off the win 62-54. Irena Kuyper and Logan Meier led scoring for the Lions with 20 points each with Iya Hoekstra adding 13. On the boards we had Kuyper leading with 14 and Meier and McKenzie Siemens each grabbing seven. Hoekstra also led with six assists and Meier and Kuyper each grabbed seven steals each.

On the weekend we played in the Roger Vander Linden Memorial Tournament hosted by Coalhurst High School. Our first game was against FP Walshe. We were able to start the tournament with a win over Walshe. Kuyper led with 23 points, Savannah Schmitt had 18 and Meier added 15. On the boards Kuyper again led with 18 with Kennedy Planger grabbing 11.  Planger earned Player of the Game.

The semi final game saw us playing the home team of Coalhurst. We were expecting a fast paced physical game which they gave us. It’s always hard to play the home team, because they want the win so badly. Our girls were able to match the pace and we took the win 85-35.  Kuyper again led scoring with 23, with Hoekstra adding 14 and both Meier and Katelynn Bennen with 13 each. Kuyper led on the boards with 14 and Hoekstra with 13. Kuyper earned Player of the Game in the win.

In the final we played Matthew Halton from Pincher Creek. They are a team with lots of height and they like to run the court fast and drive to the hoop. Our team stepped up on their defense in the key and worked hard to get rebounds. We were able to have a really good first half and hold on through the second half to take the win 79-64. Hoekstra led scoring with 28, Kuyper added 24 and Meier with 17. On the boards Kuyper had an impressive 25 rebounds and Hoekstra grabbed 10. Kuyper was huge for us in the key, she works hard on both offense and defense, and had seven blocks as well. Hoekstra earned Player of the Game.

This week we host W.R. Myers on Wednesday at Taber Christian High School. This will be our last league game and our seniors night to honour our five grade twelve players. This should be an exciting game as Myers is undefeated in the league and the Lions are tied for second place with ICHS. The JV Lions play at 6 p.m. and the SV follow at 7:30, everyone is invited to come cheer on the girls.
