The St. Mary’s Auroras girl’s basketball team closed out 2023 with a Dec. 19 win. They cruised to a 70-50 victory over Milk River, and now have some down time before rekindling their competitive fire in 2024.
“We had a good first quarter and took an 18-6 lead,” assistant coach Carolyn Siemens said. “The second quarter we struggled a bit and allowed Milk River to outscore us by one. We knew we had to step it up for the second half of the game with some intensity. The girls were able to go out and do that.”
Savannah Schmitt led the scoring with 15 steals and 27 points and had her best game of the season so far.
“Off her many steals, she was able to get fast breaks down the court for the easy lay up,” Siemens said.
Logan Meier added 17 points to the win. Haylie Peters was quick on the boards, pulling in 15 rebounds. The Auroras are off for Christmas break and will resume play on Jan. 9 when they travel to Bow Island to play Senator Gershaw.
