The W.R. Myers Rebels were triumphant in 2023. The Grade 9 girls became the South Zone 3J volleyball champions.
In a season in which local high school teams played plenty of great volleyball, the Myers girls stepped up and met their goal of raising a victory banner. Coach Cindy Kanomata said that from the get-go, that banner is what they aspired to. The season began in September and they faced off against division opponents throughout October before qualifying for the zone tournament at Kate Andrews in Coaldale. Eight teams from across southern Alberta played in the November tournament. The first day consisted of round-robin play, and the second was elimination playoffs. The Myers girls beat Irvine School in the final.
It marks a three-peat for Myers; the third consecutive year that a Grade 9 Rebels volleyball team has won the banner. Kanomata said the current roster of girls have bonded from playing together in previous years at D.A Ferguson Middle School, and she was an assistant coach to them in those years. The girls have also played together in Club Wham!, a community league.
“They have shown such growth this year, both physically and mentally,” Kanomata said. “They set goals at the very start of the year and they worked so hard every time they worked so hard every time they were on the court, at practice, or I’m so proud of the Grade 9 Girls Volleyball team! They have shown such growth this year, both physically and mentally. They set goals at the very start of the year and they worked so hard every time they were on the court at practice or games. I’m amazed looking back at video from the start of the year compared to the end; the strength, technique, court awareness, every aspect of their game has exponentially developed. They stuck together as a team and dug deep to the very end and brought home the 3J Zone Banner. in games.
