With the winter break approaching, Taber Golden Sun teams are hoping to add to their win totals in South Central Alberta Hockey League action.

U18

The U18 Suns competed in a pair of close games over the weekend. With a two-game homestand on the schedule, the weekend began with a matchup against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday night. Lethbridge would score the lone goal in the first period and the second saw no scoring, so the Hurricanes headed into the final frame with a 1-0 lead. The Hurricanes would score the first goal in the third period as well, but Rhett Klemen would cut the lead to one with Connor Eldridge chipping in with the assist. Just a few minutes later, the Hurricanes would pot another to extend the lead back to two. That lead would hold and Lethbridge would go home with a 3-1 win. Keegan Stenger made 23 saves on 26 shots in the Taber net.

The weekend finished with a matchup against the Foothills Bisons on Sunday afternoon. Kobe Fujita would open the scoring for Taber in the first period as Ashton Lukacs and Heath Hansen drew the assists. The Suns continued to find the back of the net in the second as they once again scored the first goal as Eldridge ripped one past the Bisons’ netminder and Drew Thompson found the score sheet with an assist. The Bisons would score a pair of late goals to tie the game, but right before the buzzer, Hansen would give the Suns the lead heading into the final frame. Jett Matisho and Thompson would collect assists on the goal.

In the third period, Foothills would score an early goal in the period and that would be all either team could muster as the game ended tied 3-3. Stenger was back between the pipes for Taber, making 30 saves on 33 shots.

The U18 Suns wrap up 2022 next weekend with a pair of games on the road. On Saturday, the team takes on the Red Deer Elks in a 5 p.m. game. The weekend wraps up with a matchup against the Central Alberta Selects at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
