The end of the volleyball season is near and St. Mary’s School teams are preparing for their final regular season game this week, with playoffs to follow.
Looking back at the previous few weeks, the teams have been busy as the volleyball season has seen them travel to plenty of tournaments. On the Oct. 21-22 weekend, the Auroras were in Butte competition in the Royal Rumble.
“In our pool play, we beat Senator Gershaw and Kate Andrews and split with Picture Butte,” explained Carolyn Siemens, coach of the Auroras. “Since we had beat Butte on the split, we took first place in our pool. In the quarter-finals, we met Nobleford and we were able to take a win. In the semi-finals, we again met Kate Andrews — this was our fifth time playing them in the last few weeks. We beat them three times and lost once. The games are always close, so going in, we knew it would be a tough game. They came out with lots of power out of both their left side and middle which we didn’t see in the morning game. We took them to three, but lost the third.”
Following that tournament, the Auroras saw an all-Taber match-up. Last Wednesday saw the team compete against the W.R. Myers Rebels and it was a raucous crowd in the Myers gym.
“It was their fan appreciation night, so the gym was noisy and packed. The St. Mary’s Celtics had played an exhibition game prior to our game as well. It was an exciting match going to three and seeing the Celtics fall, but only by two. The Auroras/Rebels match would see the same excitement. We won the first, lost the next two, and went on to win the fourth forcing the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was also a close game but the Rebels took the win with a 19-17 score. It’s always fun to play Myers, and the packed gym made it even more exciting,” continued Siemens.
