The St. Mary’s Auroras were back on the court last week as their volleyball season continues. The team saw a home game this past weekend as they welcomed in Cardston for a big match.
“We had a home game on Monday against Cardston. This was our second time playing Cardston as we played them at the LCC tournament where we won the match. This week, they came out on fire with great defence, tough serving, and lots of hard-hit balls on their offence. We competed with them, but we were unable to take a set off them — we lost 3-0. Our second set went to 25-27 it was our best set of the match,” explained coach Carolyn Siemens.
After a tough matchup against Cardston, the Auroras then turned their focus to a tournament in Coaldale at Kate Andrews High School. Starting at the tournament, the team saw a great opening few games that saw the Auroras go undefeated.
“This weekend, we participated in the Kate Andrews Breast Cancer Awareness Invitational. Due to Truth and Reconciliation Day falling on Friday, the tournament ran Thursday and Saturday. We were in a pool with Gershaw, Vulcan, and St. Mike’s Pincher Creek. We played two games on Thursday and won both, heading into Saturday morning, we had one more round-robin game with St. Mike’s. We were able to go undefeated in our pool play and earned first place in our pool. We crossed over with Nobleford in the quarter-final, took a win, and then met St. Mike’s again in the semi-final. We were able to have great intensity for the semi-final and made our way to the final against Kate Andrews,” continued Siemens.
Going into the final, the team was expecting a tough battle and that’s exactly what they got. With the home team hoping to get the tournament win in their own gym, the Auroras knew they would need to have their best performance of the tournament if they wanted to walk away with the gold medal.
