This past weekend saw the U13 Golden Suns compete in the SCAHL U13 Conference Playoff Tournament in Lethbridge. The teams played in a three-game round robin on Thursday and Friday with the top four in the tournament facing off in the semi-finals Saturday and the Championship game going Sunday. The respective Conference Champions will advance to a best of 3 League Championship Playoff this coming weekend.
The Suns saw their tournament open with a game against host Lethbridge Hurricanes Red. It was a battle of offence, but neither team could find a game-winning goal as it ended 5-5. Devin Gronenboom had a goal and two assists for Taber with Arlo Heal finding the back of the net twice, Nixen Miller had a goal and an assist, Yanming Chen and Liam Okell had two assists each, Truett Moeller had a single goal, and Curtis Martin, Ryan Serfas, and Heston Hansen had an assist each. Griffin Stenger was the starting netminder for the Suns and the goalie made 26 saves on 31 shots.
The first Friday game saw the Suns back on the ice against Okotoks Oilers Green. The Suns never let Okotoks have the lead the entire game and Taber would secure a bounce-back 4-2 win. Groenenboom had another two goals for the Suns with Okell chipping in with a goal and an assist, Mason Noble had a single, and Moeller, Martin, Heal, Serfas, and Foster Weatherhead found the score sheet with an assist each. Liam Slomp was the starting Taber netminder and he made 17 saves on 19 shots.
The final game of the round-robin saw the Suns take on host Lethbridge Hurricanes White. It wasn’t close as the Suns brought their best game of the tournament so far in an 8-2 victory. Miller had a hat trick and an assist, Noble had two goals and an assist, Moeller had a goal and an assist, Groenenboom had a pair of assists, Maxi Miller and Gracen Schooten had a goal each, and Hansen and Okell each had an assist. Stenger was the starting goalie and he made 13 saves on 15 shots.
