W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls volleyball team will be the walking wounded as the squad prepares to host the Southern Alberta Girls Volleyball League post-season tournament this weekend.
The Rebels will go into the tournament seeded fourth as a middle-of-the pack team and will be without some of its starters.
“We have been improving, but we are fighting some injuries. Paige Wood has a broken hand and is out as our middle. Hayley Lepard has been off for a week now, she has a small tear on the top of her hamstring. One of my powers is battling shin splints right now,” said Dee Schramm, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls volleyball team. “At this point, I’m more focused on zones than I am post-season (tournament). The goal, for most teams anyway in closing off the season is to have that zone banner and heading off to provincials.”
The Rebels limped through a tournament this past weekend in Vegreville with eight players.
“The only sub I had up there was a right side. It’s been a juggle, but the girls have done well with the juggling I have been doing,” said Schramm. “It gives girls a chance to see what they can do in other positions.”
The Rebels’ post-season tournament features matches at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday at W.R. Myers gymnasium. The team also plays at noon on Saturday. The tournament will feature matches at both Myers and D.A. Ferguson gymnasiums.
