Kuryvial three-peats as men’s club champion

Posted on August 15, 2013 by Taber Times

Mr. Clean-esque rounds over the weekend for Brett Kuryvial helped cinch his fourth men’s club championship at the Taber Golf Club with rounds of 74 and 73.

With a handicap of around one, the rounds were pretty much on par for Kuryvial who was in the final foursome of fellow competitors and family Brandon Kuryvial and Hayden Kuryvial along with Brad Bodnar.

Having family close by as competitors helped Brett stay loose with his solid rounds.

“You are a little more relaxed playing with them every other round. It’s not like you are playing with new people and you don’t know who they are,” said Brett Kuryvial, who won by six strokes over Bodnar.

Nothing overly dramatic for Kuryvial over his two rounds on Saturday and Sunday combined, that consistency suited the four-time champ just fine in securing the title with his solid play right down the score card.

“I felt like I played pretty good both rounds. I just didn’t make any big numbers. The whole weekend, I didn’t do worse than a bogey, so that helps,” said Kuryvial.

“I hit fairways, I hit greens, and I putted pretty well.”

With his three closest competitors bunched together at each three back going into the second day of competition, Brett Kuryvial’s best round at the Taber Golf Club has been a 66.

He needed no such magic for the second day, simply keeping within himself as the lead expanded as he headed down the back nine to victory.

“After the first round, it was close enough to worry about. But, after the first nine, I think I had a seven or eight-stroke lead. I knew if I kept the ball in play and didn’t do anything stupid, it was pretty much over,” said Kuryvial.

Not needing to play an overly aggressive game, Kuryvial played his game plan to perfection to win the men’s club championship title.

“You try and hit the middle of the green instead of going right at the pin. If there was trouble on the one side, I’d usually be on the other side,” said Kuryvial.

The Kuryvial name had dotted the championship for many years be it a boys or men’s championship in recent years, a feeling that will never get old for Brett himself.

“The more the merrier,” chuckled Kuryvial as 2013 marks Brett’s third straight men’s club championship and fourth in six years. “It was a great weekend of golf. Give some kudos to Mike (Galvin) for keeping the course in good shape and to Joe (Strojwas) for the great meal.”
