The lineup this year also has a more diverse focus, which not only honours the rich traditions of folk music but also pushes the boundaries, enriching and evolving the genre.
“Where music meets the mountains” is the slogan of the Canmore Folk Festival, and it couldn’t be more apt. From August 3-5, 2024, the mountains provide a stunning backdrop for an incredible line up of musicians that includes Blue Rodeo, Leith Ross, and Moontricks, among many others.
This festival is the longest running folk music festival in Alberta, making its debut in 1978. The festival has been a cornerstone of the community, drawing up to 5,000 patrons each day over its three-day duration. It attracts artists, guests, and volunteers not only from southern Alberta and western Canada but also from the USA and around the globe.
Jenna Klein-Waller, Executive Director of the festival, explains why there is every reason to be excited about attending – even if you have attended in the past.
“The Canmore Folk Festival, an intimate gathering nestled amidst the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies, prides itself on curating a lineup of top-class artists from around the globe. This unique blend of stunning natural scenery and world-class performances creates an unparalleled experience for attendees, fostering an atmosphere of connection and discovery in a beautiful mountain setting.”
Klein-Walker continues, noting, “In 2024, the Canmore Folk Festival is ushering in some exciting changes aimed at enhancing the overall guest experience. Partnering with Grizzly Paw Brewing, we’re thrilled to introduce site-wide licensing, providing patrons with the opportunity to safely enjoy a selection of beer, RTDs, and wine directly on site. What’s more, we’re extending a warm welcome to children under 12, granting them free admission! With an array of engaging activities and performances tailored for children and youth, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. And to make getting here even easier, we’re proud to unveil the Folk Fest Express—a convenient daily bus service shuttling attendees directly from Calgary to the Canmore Folk Festival grounds throughout the festival weekend.”
The lineup this year also has a more diverse focus, which not only honours the rich traditions of folk music but also pushes the boundaries, enriching and evolving the genre. Beyond being a musical event, the Canmore Folk Music Festival aims to foster a vital community of folk music enthusiasts. It creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diverse cultural heritage through traditional and contemporary folk, roots, blues, alt-country, Celtic, and world music.
“We’re excited to shine a spotlight on Alberta’s homegrown talent, offering a platform for local and provincial artists to showcase their skills to a national audience. It’s a celebration of diversity, creativity, and the vibrant spirit of folk music!” Klein-Walker adds.
The festival emphasizes sustainability and community engagement, exemplified by its reliance on more than 550 volunteers who collectively donate over 7,500 hours of labour each year.
While there is plenty to enjoy at the festival, guests are encouraged to check out all that Canmore has to offer.
“Immerse yourself in Canmore’s vibrant culture beyond the festival grounds,” Klein-Walker advises. “Explore the charm of local restaurants and shops, where every bite and purchase tell a story of our remarkable mountain town. Your journey to the Canmore Folk Festival is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure!”
