Town of Taber
Scammers sometimes go door-to-door offering quick paving or home repair deals. These are often called service scams and can include paving, air duct cleaning, furnace work, home appliance repairs, general contracting, and more. Contact may happen in person, through flyers, by phone, or online (social media or emails).
Taber is home to many legitimate and reputable local businesses, but it is always better to be cautious than scammed.
Here are a few ways to protect yourself:
• Any business doing work in the Town of Taber must have a Town of Taber business license (this is written in bylaw). Ask to see it.
• If they cannot show a license, or you suspect a scam or fraudulent activity, call the Taber Police Service at 403-223-8991. Staff can help verify if the business is legitimate.
• Be cautious of high-pressure sales tactics. Scammers may say the deal will not last or that they are “already in the neighbourhood.”
• If a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
• Do not pay upfront unless you are completely certain the company is legitimate.
• Check in with seniors, neighbours, and family members who may be more vulnerable to scams. A quick conversation can help prevent someone from being pressured into a bad deal.
