The Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) of the MD of Taber convened on Feb. 17 to discuss a variety of development applications that reflect the region’s growth and evolving needs. From employee housing to solar energy and small business ventures, the meeting highlighted the community’s commitment to progress while maintaining its rural charm.

The session began with the adoption of the February 2 meeting minutes, in which the following items were carried:

• Development Application 6-26, submitted by Leavitt Howg of van der Stoel Farms Ltd. The application proposed moving a 1,216-square-foot manufactured dwelling onto private property to provide employee housing. After review, the application was approved with conditions, including compliance with safety codes, setback requirements, and a waiver to reduce the front yard setback to 75 feet. The existing dwelling on the property must be removed before the new one is installed.

• Development Application 7-26, submitted by Andre Polzer on behalf of Genevieve Therese. This application sought approval for a 7.5kW DC/5.4kW AC roof-mounted solar array in the South Vauxhall Subdivision. The project was greenlit with conditions, including proper recycling of decommissioned panels and measures to mitigate glare for nearby residents and motorists. A waiver was also granted to reduce the front yard setback to 88 feet.

• Development Application 8-26, submitted by Abram Wieler of Budget Lane Sales. This application proposed converting a bay within an industrial building into a used vehicle sales operation. The Commission approved the application with a list of conditions, ranging from obtaining necessary permits to ensuring environmental safety through proper vehicle fluid management. The business will operate Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a maximum of 15 vehicles allowed on-site for storage at any given time.

• Development Application 164-25 (HO69-25), submitted by Kyle Howg. This application proposed a home-based business in Enchant to craft and sell wood furniture. The Commission approved the application with conditions designed to preserve the residential character of the neighbourhood. The business will operate through scheduled pickups and deliveries, with a maximum of one customer visit per week. Materials must be stored in a designated area, and the permit will be up for renewal on April 1, 2026.

As the meeting  moved to new business, delegations slated included presentations from Jessy Dyck of Jbros Fiberglass regarding Development Application 11-26 and Stuart Boeve on Subdivision Application 2025-0-190.

Development application up for consideration included approvals for a fibreglass tank manufacturing business, a ground-mounted solar array, and a hay storage building; a subdivision application addressed proposals from Frans Browers and Woordman Farms Ltd. Additionally, the MPC reviewed intermunicipal development plan (IDP) referrals from Vulcan County, the Town of Vauxhall, and Lethbridge County, seeking comments on various subdivision and bylaw amendment requests.

The discussions and decisions made during the session reflect the Commission’s commitment to sustainable growth, supporting local businesses, and ensuring thoughtful planning within the region. Learn more on the MD of Taber’s website.
