The Taber and District Chamber of Commerce has awarded the 2025 Spirit of Taber Award to the Taber Special Needs Society, recognizing their dedication to supporting individuals with disabilities and building a spirit of compassion and inclusion in the community.

The Taber Special Needs Society, which has been serving the community for nearly 40 years, provides essential programs and services that empower individuals with disabilities to thrive. Under the leadership of Executive Director Krista Douglas, who has been with the organization for nearly its entire history, the society has become a cornerstone of support for families and individuals in the Taber area.

When asked about receiving the award, Douglas expressed her gratitude and pride.

“I was honoured for the Taber Special Needs Society, the families, and the individuals we support to be recognized for their local contributions,” she says.

The organization currently supports individuals in its community access program and provides employment opportunities for several others, making a significant impact on the lives of many.

Beyond their direct support services, the society also contributes to the local economy. They help with employment, operate the Berry Patch thrift store downtown, and provide housing for individuals they support.

Douglas also praised the town of Taber for its inclusive and supportive environment.

“I don’t think Taber gets it wrong when it comes to understanding the differently abled and their ability to contribute meaningfully to the community,” she notes. “You can walk down the street with one of the individuals we support, and they know more people than most of us do! Taber has a wraparound support system for people.”

The award is a testament to the hard work and vision of the society’s board of directors, staff, and volunteers. Douglas gave special thanks to the board for their dedication and to Val Leahy and Aline Holmen for their nominations. She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Taber community for their ongoing support and opportunities provided to individuals with disabilities.

The Spirit of Taber Award celebrates organizations and individuals who embody the values of community, compassion, and collaboration. The Taber Special Needs Society’s recognition is a reminder of the power of inclusion and the positive impact of supporting every member of the community.
