The conclusion of October’s municipal election sees seven members on the MD of Taber council. These members are now into their first months of serving a four-year term.

David Torrie, Division 3 Councillor, Hamlet of Grassy Lake and Area, says of the election results, “I was happy to hear that I was elected and a bit nervous as well, because of all the unknowns.”

Nervousness aside, however, he is happy to get started.

“I am excited to meet many new people in the community and listen to what concerns they have. I want to represent them in our council and work on solutions to their concerns. So far, we have only been oriented and toured our many facilities and other partner projects. We have many projects that we are directly responsible for, such as damaged roads and bridges, and we also have many projects that we are asked to contribute cash, such as recreational and arts projects in the community. There are important decisions that need to be made.”

Torrie is looking forward to ensuring the MD is a safe and welcoming place for all.

“I hope that I can help all residents of our community feel that they are appreciated and valued.  I want to help the MD of Taber move forward as a very desirable place to live and work.  Democracy should respond to the needs of regular, wonderful people,” he says.

Ernie Peters, Division 5 Councillor & Deputy Reeve, Hamlet of Hays and area, was acclaimed.

Peters looks forward to, “The challenge of learning something new and collaborating with people.”

He says the next four years will be very interesting and cites the budget –and more – as pressing concerns that council will address.

Peters adds, “To those of you that have encouraged me and indicated that you thought I would do a good job, I say a heartfelt thanks.”
