The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed a case of avian influenza (H5N1) within the MD of Taber.

While this disease primarily affects birds, early prevention and strong biosecurity practices are key to stopping its spread.

Bird Owners

Limit Visitors: Only allow essential people near your birds, and ensure they clean their footwear and equipment before entering.

Keep Wild Birds Away: Prevent contact with wild birds and their droppings by covering outdoor pens, removing spilled feed, and using secure fencing or netting.

Clean & Disinfect: Regularly sanitize equipment, boots, tools, and housing.

Monitor for Symptoms:

• Sudden increase in illness or death

• Drop in egg production

• Swelling of the head, comb, or wattles

• Coughing, sneezing, or respiratory distress

If you suspect avian influenza, contact a veterinarian immediately and report concerns through the CFIA.

Avoid Transporting Birds: Limit the movement of animals, feed, or bedding between locations unless necessary.
