As a candidate for Taber town council, Naomi Wiebe responded to questions about issues that are central to this election. Affordable housing, a dry sports recreation facility, infrastructure, enforcement, and business development are all top of mind.

On affordable housing, Wiebe said, “(It) is not an issue unique to Taber, but it is one that deeply affects our community. Access to adequate housing is foundational, and when affordable options are limited, the consequences extend into other areas of life such as health, education, workforce participation, and community cohesion.”

In nearly eight years working with the Taber Food Bank, Wiebe has noticed a significant rise in inadequately housed clients. “This includes individuals living in vehicles or storage units, couch surfing, relying on short-term stays with friends or family, residing year-round in recreational vehicles, and, in some cases, sleeping outdoors or in tents.”

She called it a complex and challenging problem that is critical for the community to stay committed to by identifying and developing practical, long-term solutions. “Addressing housing is about more than shelter, it is about ensuring stability, dignity, and opportunity for every resident of Taber,” she said.

On developing a dry sports rec facility, she likes the idea of additional options for expanded youth programs beyond ice and aquatic sports. Those could include basketball, volleyball, fitness programs, and walking tracks, particularly when other venues are unavailable.

“Amenities of this kind may promote healthy living, attract families, and enhance the appeal of Taber for both new residents and businesses,” she said, noting other similar sized communities that have invested in similar facilities.

Wiebe cautiously endorsed moving forward with the project, saying, “Considerations include financial sustainability, the potential for partnerships with community organizations and regional partners, and the pursuit of grants or provincial and federal funding to reduce the impact on local taxpayers. Community input is essential for informing the design and function of the facility, ensuring alignment with resident needs and usage patterns.”

In terms of the enforcement of traffic issues, she said many residents are concerned and frustrated about the safety risks for families, seniors, and children. “While enforcement is necessary, perhaps it’s not enough. The Town should partner with Taber Police Service to address these issues through both targeted enforcement and preventative measures like education and community engagement. The goal should not be tickets but making our streets safer and enjoyable for all. This balanced approach will enhance safety and quality of life in Taber,” she said.

Wiebe identified four infrastructure priorities that she would like to target as a council member:

Growth planning – New developments, such as housing and commercial areas, should be supported by adequate infrastructure to prevent future shortfalls.

Roads and sidewalks – Regular maintenance and upgrades are important to ensure safety and accessibility in both residential and high-traffic locations.

Water and wastewater systems – Investments in reliable utilities are necessary to support residents as well as local industries.

Community facilities – Recreation and gathering spaces should be planned to accommodate families, youth, and seniors, while considering long-term sustainability.

She believes that infrastructure is part of drawing new business and industry into town. She said, “Attracting new industries involves making Taber appealing for investment, which includes maintaining infrastructure such as roads and utilities as well as providing available land and a business-oriented regulatory environment.”

“It is also important to highlight Taber’s location, workforce skills, and agricultural base,” she said. “Additionally, quality of life indicators can influence companies’ decisions regarding relocation or expansion, as they consider whether employees will choose to live and raise families in the area. Supporting industry and community development simultaneously can help foster sustainable growth.”

She pointed out that major industries and employment opportunities contribute to the long-term economic stability of Taber.
