As a candidate for Taber town council, Josh Antoniuk responded to questions about key issues in the municipal election. The five topics he addressed were affordable housing, a dry sports recreation facility, infrastructure, enforcement, and business development.

Antoniuk rated the importance of developing viable affordable housing in Taber as “absolutely essential.” He said over the past year, he has friends who work in Taber but have been forced to find housing in nearby communities because they couldn’t find anything affordable here.

“It’s a tough position for them, and a missed opportunity for Taber,” he said. “I would love to explore all options for increasing affordable housing. This includes considering initiatives that support landlords who keep rental prices reasonable. A thriving community needs space for everyone.”

The previous council threw its weight behind a dry sports rec facility project that Antoniuk fully supports. “For two years, I drove my son to Lethbridge for competitive soccer. I often wished there was a program here in Taber, so he could have built friendships and community right at home,” he said.

“A dry sports facility would give our youth more opportunities, build community pride, and even attract tournaments or events,” he continued. “As a town councillor I would love to pursue options such as grants, community fundraising, and creative partnerships. Taber is full of people ready to invest in a better future – let’s give them the chance.”

On the need for more enforcement of excessively loud vehicles, stunting and other traffic issues he said, “If we have bylaws in place, then we should be enforcing them fairly and consistently. I believe in giving a warning first, but repeat offences should result in tickets.”

He thinks the Town could direct ticket revenues toward important community needs, like affordable housing or a dry rec facility, and added, “Enforcement isn’t about punishment, it’s about keeping our community safe and enjoyable for everyone.”

His approach to infrastructure priorities was shaped in part by the Taber Citizen Walk About, and he noted, “A town’s core is only as strong as its most neglected parts. We saw firsthand how difficult some sidewalks were to navigate, particularly for citizens with accessibility needs. I’m excited to advocate for safe, accessible infrastructure downtown. This is a key to making our community walkable, livable, and welcoming.”

Antoniuk supports Taber’s continued growth through attracting new businesses and industries to town. He recalled his early days in Town, saying, “When my family first moved to Taber, I remember there being only one traffic light and three pizza places; it has been incredible watching our community’s growth over the years!”

He believes the best way to promote growth is by investing in housing, recreation, infrastructure, and livability. “When we build a community with a great quality of life, businesses and families alike will choose to put down roots in Taber,” he said.

“I love Taber. It’s my home. I would be honoured to serve on town council. I’m committed to making the right choices, even when they’re tough. Whatever the task, I’ll do the work, show up prepared, listen, and be someone you can trust.”
