The general election that was scheduled for October arrived early and Prime Minister Mark Carney won out in March 2025, but the municipal elections are still a go for this fall. Potential and current mayors, councillors, and school board trustees will file their nomination papers for the election on Oct. 20. While some new names are sure to land on the ballot, many veteran community officials wish to return for another term of service.
Carly Firth is one of the latter, serving her second term and aspiring to another. The Town of Taber council has seven members – one of whom is the mayor – and she is the first to publicly confirm her intention to run again.
Her time in office gives her knowledge and perspective on where the town has been in recent years and the direction in which it might be headed. In an email, she described the initiatives that she would like to continue to see through.
“Taber has seen some significant growth in the past few years and I’m excited to be a part of the planning moving forward,” she said. “My intention when I ran initially was to increase transparency and accountability from council to the public, so I hope that I have contributed to that.”
“My hope for the Taber in the future is to continue to grow but to retain the same small town feeling and community spirit that we all benefit from now,” she continued. “I would also like to see Taber continue to foster relationships with our neighboring municipalities and continue collaborating to benefit all citizens.”
She is proud to have been a part of the continued development of two major projects: the Trout Pond recreation area and the planning and building of the new fire hall.
In council meetings Firth is notable for her measured and thoughtful approach.
Her commitment to the common good has been evident, and she spoke warmly about recent events in town.
“I was so touched by the community spirit and support we saw during Taber’s 120th birthday celebration, Canada Day, and the Southern Alberta Summer Games. It made me feel incredibly grateful to be a part of this amazing community and humbled to represent the incredible people who call this place home.”
