I.C.Y.M.I.: This Famous Cowboy Cafe In Southern Alberta Deserves A Spot On Your Bucket List

Posted on August 7, 2024 by Britanny Burr

Have you ever heard of the Chuckwagon Cafe? If not, you’re welcome. This cowboy-style restaurant is an absolute must-stop for anyone ready for an unforgettable meal. Located in Turner Valley, it’s worth the trip. Naturally, it’s located on the historic Cowboy Trail – also known as Highway 22.

The hotspot was first established in 1998 and is known for serving up mouth-watering breakfast dishes all day long. On top of the all day breakfast, this place is known for its beef. The owner, Terry Myhre, raises his own cattle on a farm just outside of town. Over half of the beef they serve up is from his farm, and all of it is AAA Alberta beef.

If you’re wondering why this place sounds familiar, it might be because it’s been featured on the TV show “You Gotta Eat Here.” Not ringing a bell? Perhaps you caught wind of it during its three-year reign as #1 Burger in Alberta, as awarded by Avenue Magazine. You may come for the buzz, but the laid-back, western atmosphere and unbeatable food will have you hooked. If you need a little more Alberta energy in your life, this place is literally a bright red bard with an “All Day Breakfast” sign out front. You simply can’t miss it.

Now, let’s talk about the food. Lovers of breakfast food will be in heaven here. Their “Famous Benny’s” menu is stacked with creative renditions of the crowd-pleasing dish. You’ll find Smoked Salmon Benedict, a Flat Iron Steak Benedict, and a Triple-A Tenderloin Steak Benedict, to name a few. They’ve also got a ton of omelettes, various breakfast platters, and a ton of sweet dishes like French toast and pancakes for anyone who wouldn’t dare eat breakfast without a bit of syrup on top.

Not feeling breakfast? No problem. Grab a burger, sandwich, or a warm bowl of soup to fill you up. The place is small, adding to its charm, and there’s almost always a line of hungry Albertans waiting to get a famous benny or burger for themselves. The service is wonderful, with friendly staff and welcoming energy. To top it all off, they have a takeout window so you can enjoy their great dishes on the fly.

Last but not least: the dessert. The homemade pies are out of this world, and there’s no telling with the kitchen will dream up on any given day. From seasonal pies like pumpkin in the fall to familiar favourites like banana cream, you’re in for a treat no matter what.

Nothing on the menu will do you wrong, but you know you’re in the best hands with anything that includes beef. Obviously, the steak and eggs or Steak Benedict are top-shelf choices. If you’re not used to country living, you better buckle up to see folks in cowboy hats. We’re not talking Calgary Stampede-style hats either. You’re about to bump elbows with some real Albertan Cowboys and girls.
